Roser AG Birsfelden (CH):
Fine fir veneer for the Novartis Pavilion
Bonn/Birsfelden (CH). What strikes you immediately when you enter the new ring-shaped pavilion of the international pharmaceutical group Novartis in the north of Basel? The high-tech building, designed by the Italian design collective AMDL Circle and built by architect Christian Blaser, whose shell, consisting of tens of thousands of photovoltaic elements and illuminated with LEDs, is supported by a wooden structure, is particularly bright on the inside. At the same time, the room dimensions are lush and yet noise is wonderfully insulated. This is made possible by surfaces veneered with almost white fir wood, which have been extensively slotted and backed with fleece.
The Novartis Pavilion is dedicated to collaborative learning and dialogue on scientific topics as well as the future of healthcare. Roser AG of Birsfelden, Switzerland, was responsible for the approximately 3,000 square meters of plain and elegant fir veneer from regional cultivation processed by Erne Holzbau AG of Laufenburg, Switzerland, to create the appropriate atmosphere in the visitor center. "Our employees procured large quantities of fir wood for this, sliced it and covered the carrier boards with it," says Fabian Sager, who is responsible for veneer projects at Roser AG, among other things, and explains further: "The strong fir trunks were quartered for this and sliced in the so-called real quarter cut. Subsequently, the veneer sheets of different widths were wildly mixed and then joined in such a way that an overall homogeneous appearance was created." Thanks to the slitting of the large-scale veneered panels and the backing with a fleece, the exhibition space also boasts a particularly calm atmosphere, which in turn creates a feeling of undisturbedness for the visitor. "With this project, the natural material veneer once again proves its attractiveness. The many possible uses of the 'fillet of the tree' impress the viewer time and again," concludes Ursula Geismann, long-standing trend analyst and managing director of the Initiative Furnier + Natur (IFN), about this exciting project in the Basel area. Initiative Veneer + Nature (IFN)
The Initiative Furnier + Natur (IFN) e.V. was founded in 1996 by the German veneer industry and its partners. Today it is supported by European companies from the veneer industry, the trade and the veneer processing industry as well as trade associations of the wood industry. The aim of the association is to promote veneer as a natural all-rounder.
